Oscar Predictions
Best Cinematography
Moonlight
Silence
Lion
La La Land
Arival

I predict that Rodrigo Prieto will win best cinematography for Silence. I believe that it’s a travesty that Silence is only nominated for one Oscar, but the cinematography nomination is very well deserved. Since Silence was filmed on location in Taiwan, Prieto had to use all the elements he could, such as fog and natural light, to create the best cinematography of the year.

Best Adapted Screenplay
Arrival
Fences
Hidden Figures
Lion
Moonlight

I predict that August Wilson will win best-adapted screenplay for Fences. Fences was an extremely well-made movie and the Oscar’s have treated it well, nominating it for four Oscars. August Wilson, who also wrote the script for the play “Fences,” died in 2005, but wrote the Fences screenplay prior to his death. The Oscar’s love honoring the deceased, and I believe Fences will win for best adapted screenplay.

Best Original Screenplay
Hell or High Water
La La Land
The Lobster
Manchester by the Sea
20th Century Women

I predict that Damien Chazelle will win Best Original Screenplay for La La Land. The Oscar’s love La La Land, deservingly so, and have nominated it for a record 14 Academy Awards. Chazelle effortlessly brought classic Hollywood musicals into modern times. Chazelle wrote two, likable main characters which contained the same problems, hopes, and dreams of millions and managed to combine songs and dialogue while keeping the central theme of what one will gives to achieve their dreams.

Best Supporting Actress
Viola Davis
Naomie Harris
Nicole Kidman
Octavia Spencer
Michelle Williams

I predict Viola Davis will win best-supporting actress for Fences. Viola Davis has already been nominated for two other Academy Awards for The Help and Doubt, but she will finally take home the trophy on February 26th. Her biggest competition is Michelle Williams for Manchester by the Sea, but Davis’ gave the performance of her career and she will be awarded.

Best Supporting Actor
Mahershala Ali
Jeff Bridges
Lucas Hedges
Dev Patel
Michael Shannon

I predict Mahershala Ali will win best supporting actor for Moonlight. Mahershala Ali is an early favorite for the award. His only competition is Michael Shannon, but this is the easiest one to predict, Ali will win in a landslide.

Best Actress in a Leading Role
Natalie Portman
Emma Stone
Isabelle Huppert
Meryl Streep
Ruth Negga

I predict Emma Stone will win best actress in a leading role for La La Land. This is a two horse race for best actress between Emma Stone and Natalie Portman. However, Emma Stone has been the favorite to win since La La Land debuted. Her great dancing and singing abilities as well as an emotional performance as Mia will give her the edge.

Best Actor in a Leading Role
Andrew Garfield
Ryan Gosling
Denzel Washington
Casey Affleck
Viggo Mortensen

I predict Denzel Washington will win for best actor in a leading role for Fences. When the nominations came out, Casey Affleck was a big favorite for his role in Manchester by the Sea. However, Affleck has been plagued with sexual assault allegations and it has hurt his chances to win. In contrast, Washington has been gaining momentum with the awards approaching, with him recently winning The SAG award for best actor.

Best Picture
La La Land
Arrival
Lion
Hell or High Water
Hidden Figures
Moonlight
Hacksaw Ridge
Manchester by the Sea
Fences

I predict La La Land will win best picture. The only movie making La La Land nervous is Moonlight. Moonlight checks all of the Academy’s favorite topics, such as diversity and homosexuality. However, Hollywood loves nothing more than itself and La La Land is an amazing a beautiful love letter to classic Hollywood musicals.
